Now let’s consider some of the basic foundational concepts from a positive psychological standpoint. We learn that having a positive attitude, a hopeful mindset, and a sense of contentment in the present all play large roles in increasing well-being, flourishing, and even having the “good life.” What if we were to take all of this to the furthest extent of our being? What if we not only had “positive attitudes,” but we also loved God with all of our hearts? What if we not only had a sense of contentment in the present, but we also served God joyfully in all of our circumstances? Thus, it would appear that having a jealous God who commands us to love Him and to serve Him exclusively would bring about a joy few have ever known!
With God’s great commandments, simple “optimism” becomes transformative love and loyalty. By following God’s great commandments, simple “contentment with present circumstances” becomes overflowing joy in every situation. This is the power and the glory of God’s first commandment: Have no other gods before Me. He commands us to love Him and to obey Him with all of our hearts. Not because He needs us to love Him, but because we need for us to love Him.
