Appendix C – Structural Deliverable 2 – Preliminary Building Frame DesignSpecific Expectations You are required to undertake a preliminary design of the building frame of the design project. If you make assumptions in the assignment, list assumptions and a concise reasoning for your choice.The submission consists of two main tasks:Task 1 (Estimating the Loads): (45 Marks).
Calculation of External Forces (10 Marks): a. Dead Loads and Self Weight: You are required to establish an appropriate dead load self-weight and any additional loads for the building and provide a brief discussion and reasoning for your choice. b. Live Loads: You are required to establish an appropriate live load for the building and provide a brief discussion and reasoning for your choice. c. Wind Loads: Using Region B, TC – 2.0, importance level 2 (Cdyn, Ms, Mt=1.0). You are required to calculate the wind pressures on all surfaces of the building for when the wind is blowing from the North direction and West direction and calculate the total base overturning moments and base shear force. (internal pressure can be neglected for this assignment) d. Earthquake Loads: Using a sub-soil classification of Be, calculate the earthquake forces and the total base overturning moment and base shear force. e. Provide a Tabulated Summary of Earthquake and Wind Base Overturning moments and shear forces and provide comment on which force will govern the design?
Load take down (12 Marks) You are required to draw and calculate the tributary areas to establish the load at ground level for the lift core (WS, W6, W7, W8, W9, W10) and east stair core (W1, W2, W3, W4) and Column C10 and C15. The lift and stair/core walls are to be considered as separate walls for load take down purposes for gravity loads. You are to provide a summary table of your results for tributary loading area and un-factored dead and live loads for each element.
Load accumulation and force diagrams (10 Marks):You are required to: 1) Provide load accumulation force (Axial Load, Shear Force and Bending Moment) diagrams for a. Dead and live load for Column C10 and C15; and b. Dead load, live load and north and western direction wind loading for lift core (WS, W6, W7, W8, W9, W10) and east stair core (W1, W2, W3, W4). For the purposes of wind load calculation you can ignore walls W9, W10, W11, W16 and W17. hint: For North direction lateral loading, calculate load distribution of wind loads first (see Task 1 (5)). 2) Provide a sketch plan summarising Column C10, C15, the lift and east stair core at Ground Floor clearly noting the design forces for each element.
