In addition to Awareness, the AMCD Multicultural Competencies stress the importance of knowledge of cultures that are different from our own.
Students will participate in a combination of three diversity related activities designed to increase awareness and knowledge of a specific minority population. Choose a population that you do not belong to, and is of interest to you. Students will participate in three activities:
One media activity (e.g., a novel, play, or movie) representing the selected group.
One community activity such as a cultural fair or celebration, community meeting, presentation, support group, or exhibition. Events such as walks to support research on Autism, etc., will not count. The purpose is to immerse yourself as much as possible in the selected culture. Some of you have had opportunities to travel or immerse yourselves in cultures other than your own in the past, however, you may not use those experiences. The purpose of this assignment is to immerse yourself in a culture this semester using perspectives you have learned from this class.
One food, language, ceremonial, etc analysis.
Create a presentation discussing what you learned about the specific population including insights as to what was learned about yourself. This activity will be most beneficial if students choose activities that are meaningful and challenging, rather than simply involving themselves in endeavors that are most convenient or timely.
