Burndowncharts use this information to plan the work within a sprint using an idealtrend. Actual work, using story points is then mapped against this trend todetermine how work is progressing or how the work is burning down.Burnup charts show a similar perspective in that they reÖect the rate atwhich work is being completed. However, they do have an extra componentfor mapping scope, so that any changes to scope within in the sprint can beconsidered. This chart allows you to understand if the team has more workthan they can deliver and what impact changing scope has had on theirdelivery. This is tied to the Agile concept of Velocity or the rate at which theteam can complete work within their sprints. Note that Agile focuses ondelivering valuable, working software and is designed to support developersby creating a team environment in which this is possible. Velocity allows thescrum master to predict the amount of work that the team can completewithin a sprint, and this will inÖuence which stories will be moved from theproduct backlog into the sprint backlog for completion in the sprint. Notethat velocity is not a target but a measure to guide planning. Informationradiators ensure that teams have vital information about how the team isprogressing.
