Academic rhetorical evaluation of an essay

Purpose:The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate that you can critique or analyze and evaluate another writer’s essay–regardless of whether or not you agree with the writer’s position. You need to demonstrate the ability to read and respond critically to the assigned essay as described in From Inquiry to Academic Writing chapter 2 and in chapter 16 of The McGraw-Hill handbook. By developing the ability to critique the writing of others, you should be able to construct your own essays better, expository or persuasive.
Task:Using the information provided in the text, please evaluate the essay “Why Some societies Make Disastrous Decisions” found within our Canvas Site under the “Pages” category.  Remember to convince your readers that the essay is, or is not presented logically and effectively, using specific examples from the text. Of course, you are free to disagree with the author, but you must provide credible criticism of their presentation; that is, you need to critique the author’s completeness, fairness (bias), clarity, accuracy, significance, and logical presentation (logical fallacies) as mentioned in class and in the texts.
THIS IS NOT A REBUTTAL ARGUMENT. Please work with the information provided in the essay itself and ascertain the writer’s effectiveness. As stated, you are free to disagree with the author, but this paper is not intended to provide a refutation of evidence with counter evidence, counter proposals, etc. While you should examine the author’s use of emotional and ethical appeals, your primary goal is to evaluate whether the author’s essay is sound and logical as well as fair, accurate, significant, and etc. Again, refer to Chapters 2 & 8 of fIAW, chapter 8 of the McGraw-Hill, and the class discussion for guidance in this.
Evaluation:Papers will primarily be assessed upon the standards listed in the “Shared Criteria” used by the English Department (found on Canvas) and should be essentially error free as well as how well you use the elements of critique outlined in the text and in class. Pay particular attention to the examples provided in class activities. This paper is worth 100 points.
Format:The paper should be between two to three typed and double-spaced pages complete with a “Works Cited” page as presented in class and in McGraw-Hill, on pages 276-317. Quotations, paraphrases, and other references should be used and need to conform to MLA. An example of a Works Cited page is found on pages 316-317 of the McGraw-Hill. Please notify me of any questions.
