This assignment you need to make an argument-interpret the readings, analyze the readings (You did not do this for Essay #3-you only stated the facts of the Declaration. Please read the example I have below- you can see that I make an interpretation of three readings. You need to write two of the readings, but make sure you make an argument.
Essay #4 Second Draft Instructions
* Your questions and your reasons why the questions are important to you and other people should disappear. Instead you should have written the answers to any questions you wanted to answer in this essay.
* Write both an introduction and a conclusion for this draft.
* The last sentence or two of your introduction should be your thesis statement.
* The thesis statement needs to make an arguable claim. This means that your thesis statement should be an answer to a second level question.
* If your thesis is just an answer to a first level question you will only be providing the reader with information they could get from the reading.
* Your assignment is to tell the reader your interpretation or opinion about something in the reading.
* Your body paragraphs should further elaborate on your reasons stated in the thesis statement and should include examples to illustrate your point. In this case your examples will be quotes from the readings you chose.
Example of an introduction and thesis for an essay requiring the use of more than one text. (NOTE: You won’t always have to introduce all of your sources in the introduction and thesis, but for this paper it makes sense.)
Usually I write my thesis statement before I write the introduction because once I know what my claim (argument) is going to be it is easier for me to introduce it. I also noticed that in order to incorporate all three of my source texts, I need to change my thesis a little. First I figured out a question: Do some children’s books teach children about serious issues in the adult world such as fascism for example? Now taking up where I left off from my Essay #3 example, let’s start with a new thesis to incorporate all three of my sources:
Thesis: In the texts written by L’Engle, Rowling, and Hunter the authors use fantasy to teach a lesson about fascism, an ideology that strives for and enforces uniformity with threats and violence, that uniformity brought about by fear and coercion is not harmony because characters who are different or fall out of step suffer; harmony on the other hand results from loving people regardless of their differences and flaws.
Introduction plus thesis:
People might think that children’s books are written solely for the entertainment of children. This is not necessarily the case. Some children’s books also touch on important issues societies face today. Through the use of fantasy characters and situations an author can teach children about some of the abstract concepts behind the problems societies face. Three authors who do this are Madeline L’Engle in her novel, A Wrinkle in Time, J. K. Rowling in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Erin Hunter in Warriors #6: The Darkest Hour. Although each novel tells a different story, the three have one theme in common. They all show societies that have adopted fascism, an ideology that strives for and enforces uniformity with threats and violence, as their form of government. All three show a harsh environment in which force and coercion are used to maintain tight control over the members of the society. By using fantasy and characters that children can relate to, these authors encourage children to think about and feel what it would be like to live in a society that tries to control every aspect of life. In the texts written by L’Engle, Rowling, and Hunter the authors use fantasy to teach a lesson about fascism, an ideology that strives for and enforces uniformity with threats and violence, that uniformity brought about by fear and coercion is not harmony because characters who are different or fall out of step suffer; instead harmony results from loving people regardless of their differences and flaws.
NOTE: Do you see the changes I made in the thesis statement after writing my introduction? I eliminated the phrase that describes fascism from the thesis and moved it into the introduction. I also removed unnecessary words from the part highlighted in pink making for a more concise statement.
At this point a reader would expect my body paragraphs to explain how each novel teaches about fascism. They could either be organized with each paragraph describing a specific element of fascism about all three novels or with each paragraph describing all of the elements of fascism present in only one novel per paragraph. Or it could be a mix of those two methods.
