Example Self-Introduction Full-Sentence Outline
Title: A Change of Course
Topic: Self-Introduction
Method of Organization: Full-Sentence Outline
Specific Purpose: Introducing myself to my audience in this course
Thesis: At age 42, I’m changing careers and facing the prospect of my first-ever formal job interview.
Introduction (this is where you start speaking):
My name is __________ and I am from Nashville, Tennessee and I have embarked on what most middle age men dare to face—starting a completely new career in my 40s.
Capture Attention: I’m 42 years old and I’ve worked my entire adult life only having had two jobs. I’ve worked for 21 years as a supervisor in facility maintenance and 23 years concurrently as a freelance artist and graphic designer. A back injury followed by a second more devastating back injury interrupted what some would probably call an atypical career path.
State the thesis: At age 42, I’m changing careers and facing the prospect of my first-ever formal job interview.
Establish Credibility: I have always enjoyed physical labor and working with my hands. At the same time, I’ve pursued art and the dream of being an artist and graphic designer full time. While working towards an art career, I found stability working as a facility maintenance professional. Paying the bills doing physical labor I enjoyed allowed me the flexibility to work as an artist without having to count on a consistent income from it.
Preview the speech: I’ve always been a hard worker, working alone on large scale projects if that’s what it took to get the job done. However, I failed to realize the impact of the idea that just because I could do something doesn’t mean that I should do it. It was a tough lesson to learn from experience. My back had worn down and failed ounce and my stubbornness caused me to injure it again, this time much more seriously, ending my career doing any kind of physical work. I had to find my way through what happened, how I would support my family going forward, and my path to redirecting my career.
I. I had ruptured the same disc for a second time, this time fragmenting it.
A. I was climbing off a roof top like I had hundreds of times.
B. As I drove back to our shop I was aware of a growing area of pain I recognized.
1. I went home that night thinking believing I would somehow be better in the morning.
a. The next morning, it was clear that the emergency room was an inevitability.
b. The x-rays were followed by a CT scan and a welcome round of pain killers.
2. Feeling like a familiar moment, I was shocked to hear the doctor say that I’d never be able to perform any type of physical labor again.
a. I had fragmented my L4-L5 disc, meaning that it had ruptured and partially broken away impacting the nerves in my lower spine.
b. The pain was tremendous and could only be relieved by a surgery that removed the damaged part of the disc and relied on the remaining disc material to support the function of my lower back.
c. I would face a six-month recovery to an undetermined point of physical impairment.
C. My steady and successful career of maintaining, remodeling, and scratch-building facility management projects was over.
1. I could no longer lift, twist, or bend down without absolute precaution.
2. Every practical skill I had required these movements.
a. I couldn’t do carpentry, plumbing, or metal fabrication.
b. I wasn’t able to push carts or lift materials of any size.
c. Even driving the forklift was no longer allowed.
d. Complicating all of this was the realization that I couldn’t sit or stand for more than thirty minutes at a time without having to switch activities to avoid debilitating pain.
Transition: I now faced the dilemma of being a provider for my family in the face of the knowledge that my physical abilities were severely limited and I that needed to find a plan that would allow me to keep being a provider for my wife and two children. What skills did I have left?
II. My second career as an artist and graphic designer was now going to have to take the lead and pay the bills.
A. While I had enjoyed a fair amount of success as an artist, consistently earning a steady income from the effort was very difficult.
B. Periods of steady work were often followed by extended periods of no work where all my extra time and energy was focused finding new clients.
1. I felt I had reached the limit of where I could go on my own without gaining greater credibility as an artist.
a. Although I had 20+ years of experience, it seemed that I was not being considered for higher level jobs because of a perceived lack of educational qualifications.
b. I was self-taught and experienced, but the competitive nature of the graphic design world was looking for more and I needed to bridge the gap.
2. The realization that my passion was going to have to become my vocation left me with considerable doubt that I had the ability to make the jump.
a. I could no longer be a freelance designer.
b. I would need to be working for a company as an employee and not a contractor.
c. I would need to be qualified beyond the shadow of a doubt to earn the position and income that I needed.
Transition: While the goal was now evident, I was unsure of how well I would do on the path.
III. Earning a bachelor’s degree in graphic design seemed like the right step to take.
A. As I explored job listings, the common requirement was a Bachelor’s degree and qualifying experience in a number of digital art platforms.
B. While I was experienced in producing digital art, I saw being self-taught as a possible question mark for potential employers.
1. Getting my degree would boost my credibility as a designer and studying the latest digital art platforms would certainly add to and further sharpen my abilities.
2. As much as it could be an opportunity to learn, I hoped it would also be a validation of my experience as a designer and a chance to inventory skills. I still had from my previous work that could be useful in a new setting.
C. Deciding to attend Herzing University has been very rewarding and a decision I consider one of the most important I’ve ever made in mine and my family’s life.
1. Not only have I found success as a student, I’ve been able to apply the things I’ve learned to the freelance work I’m continuing to do while I’m still a student.
2. The classes and workload have proved to be challenging and rewarding.
a. It is especially gratifying to be able to successfully complete sizable assignments that immediately relate to the quality expected in the professional design world.
b. I’ve seen the quality of my work both artistically and academically exceed what I consider my own high expectations.
Transition: Going forward, the pursuit of a degree has changed my outlook on the resolution of this difficult time in my life.
Conclusion: While an injury unexpectedly changed the direction of my life, I feel like it has pushed me so much further towards pursuing my dream of being a full-time professional graphic designer. While I was working as a designer, I realize that I was resting on my abilities to do other work. At the same time, an event in my life I would have never chosen for myself has proven to be a blessing that has challenged me to reach farther and to achieve more than I thought possible in such a short period of time. I often joke that having no choice is a supreme motivator, but it rings true when a disaster turns into a breakthrough for which I am more and more thankful every day. For starters, I’m going to college and regaining the confidence that I can provide for my family again and I’ll be doing it following my dream.
